RE: Trip Report: Daingerfield State Park, TX (pics included)

TTR Thanks for the picts. My kids grew up spending many happy weeks at Dangerfield SP swimming, learning about wildlife, walking the trail around the lake, learning how to fish, catching lake trout when TPW released them in winter, and just having fun. We started off in an old tent, moved up to a pickup camper, and then a well used Winnibego, we all learned to camp together and Dangerfield has always been my favorite. Larry

RE: First timer in Texas

OB I would start at Matagorda Island Nature Park, south of the town of Matagorda where the Colorado river runs into the Gulf. Then take State hwy 35 south through Palacios, and Port Lavaca, good small RV parks in both. There are good parks in Magnolia Beach and Port O'Connor. Back to 35 south and on to Goose Island State Park, visit Aransas National Wildlife Refuge, then to Aransas Pass and Port Aransas and the beach on Mustang and South Padre Islands, Corpus Christi has good RV parks and not to miss is the Texas State Aquarium and the aircraft carrier USS Lexington. then take US hwy 77 south to Riveria Beach, Port Mansfield and then into the lower RGV and the tows of Port Isabel and South Padre Island. I would suggest you stay in Texas State Parks and buy the annual park pass. Get a good Texas state map. And find all the discount coupons you can thru the internet. Happy Travels Larry

RE: Ideas for Small Southern Town with Central CG

Try Abbeville. We stay at Abbeville RV park owned by the city, nice and clean, walking distance from downtown(long walk). Larry

RE: US 59 Oklahoma

Good road, beautiful drive. Take your time and spend afew days on the lakes at the state parks. If you like to fish, Honey Creek SP on Grand lake is one of the best spots I know of for crappie. We spend lots of time in NE Okla. and have never been anywhere we did not like. Happy Travels Larry

RE: Summerizing

I use max-air roof vent covers and keep the vents open when the RV is not in use. I also open the door, screen closed, as often as possible. Air flowing through is the best mold fighter I know of. I use 2 containers of Damp Rid, 1 in front other in back, and keep the water emptied all the time. I keep the inside of the RV as clean as possible because mold grows best on dirt. We use it as much as we can, spend lots of time at state or national parks not far from home. When it gets real hot we go north for a while. Good Luck Larry

RE: Big Bend to RGV

TomG2 Sorry I wasn't clear. At one time Laredo was a great place to visit, park, and walk the streets. Now is a diferent story. It is still a good place to visit but in my openion law enforcement is so busy doing other things some of the locals will rip anyone off if they get a chance. When there we are very carefull where we park and where we walk. I'm sure most of the business owners are honest but some of the folks on the street are scarry. No problem crossing into Mexico as long as you keep going and don't stop untill Montrrrey. Don't get me wrong, I love south Texas and Mexico, it is just that I think you should be very carefull around Laredo. Larry

RE: Bad gas alert....

Andrea Don't worry about ruining your fuel pump by using Valero gas in the CC area. The news folks just ran out of anything interesting to say. Gas prices continue to fall. Good Luck Larry

RE: Big Bend to RGV

Don't miss the Davis mountains, Marfa lights, Langtry, lake Amistad, Del Rio, Laredo but be carefull. The Texas State Parks in this area are great. You will be close enough to the hill country to see the southern edge if you want to take the time. November in south Texas is "fall". IMO the best time to see the sites. Take your time and listen to the locals and you can't go wrong. Happy Travels Larry

RE: Marine radios

Komfort You did not say how you intended to use the radio. I have used Standard in small boats for years. none are water "proof". When dunked in salt water they all die so I go for cheap and easily replasable. I use Midland X-Tra-Talk walkie talkie when fishing in my kayak to answer DW. It will communicate for about 7-8 miles if in line of site, has a weather channel, and is cheap. It also has some CB channels that I use on the road when traveling in caravan with friends. I do use a waterproof pouch from West Marine when in the kayak. Good luck fishing. Larry

RE: Jefferson City, MO to Mission TX

From Texarkana it is better to take US 59 to Carthage then US 79 to Rockdale then US 77 to Victoria then 77 to Riviera turn left at stoplight on 285 to Falfurrias then US 281 to McAllen then to your destination. This way you will miss Houston and the road work on US 83 around Weslaco. Good roads with small towns. Better scenery and restaurants. Have a great trip. Larry

RE: Campground Ideas Between Galveston & Port Aransas

Come on down, check in to Goose Island SP and take a look around. The closer you go to Galveston the parks are full due to Ike clean up workers. There are so many parks on the water from Palacos to port A you will be able to find just what you want. Larry

RE: Reservations made - biking trails available?

Bentson-Rio Grande SP is a great place to ride as are all of Texas's state parks, and there is so much to see...birds, butterflys, wildlife. When you are siteseeing be sure to plan ahead and take your bikes if there is any chance you can ride. We usually take ours to small towns we visit and ride the mostly unused streets to view the antebellum houses( yes, there are many in every Texas town). We also always take them to the beach. Its hard enough to ride on without to much effort and we can see a lot more of it. I have a carrier on the back of mine where I can carry a cooler and picknick, my wife has a basket where she can carry sea shells and her purchases from the small shops we have to visit. Have a great winter in Texas Larry

RE: RGV for Dec - Feb

Dennis Ike brought lots of high tide (3 to 4 foot) but no wind to the coastal bend. The water came up slowly so everyone had time to prepare. A lot of building material and furniture from Galveston Island and the Boliver peninsula is still washing up on the beaches. Looks like things will be back to normal soon. Larry PS: The fishing has been great, reds and trout are hungry.

RE: RGV for Dec - Feb

Big Dog Come on down to the coastal bend. Start in Palacos, then to Port Lavaca, Rockport/Fulton, Aransas Pass, Port Aransas, Ingleside, Portland, Corpus Christi, Port Mansfield, South Padre island. There are lots of parks. Just find the one you like. Larry

RE: Rain in RGV? 3in???!!!!!

We just got back from McAllen, every where you look the flowers are blooming, the grass and trees are green and the birds and butterflys are everywhere. Its not always like this. A little rain can be a good thing. When we got home Ike had left a foot of water in the garage, I would rather have had rain.

RE: Where to go in Texas for winter months?

okienewbie It depends on the timeing of your trip. Lots of folks start early and visit the Texas State Parks as they go south, you can purchase a state park pass that will save you $ if this interests you. There is nowhere you can drive in one day that is warmer than Oklahoma so plan your trip. The Hill Country is warm enough early in the winter with lots of places to visit. The Coastal Bend is warm all winter with the exception of the Blue Northers that blow through but don't last long. Lots of small towns on the Gulf with good fishing, birding, places to shop and eat, Corpus Christi nearby for big city needs. The Valley is warmest with more RV parks and resorts than you can shake a stick at. The Gulf close by and the best local nature parks but lots of traffic and fast paced on the streets and freeways. I would sugest that you try all the places in Texas and find the one that suits you the best. I left Grand Lake of the Cherokees to find a job 43 years ago and have been traveling Texas since, hav'nt found a place I don't like during my journey. Best Wishes Larry

RE: Goose Island SP and Mustang Island SP in Texas

Be sure to take the time to visit the old down town and the maritime museum in Rockport, the Fulton mansion and Hu-Dats restarunt in Fulton, and spend time in Port Aransas eating, shopping, birding, people watching, and go thru the visitor center at University of Texas Marine Science Center. Not many flounder any more but the surf fishing is good and fishing off of the south jetty is a lot of fun. Happy Travels Larry
